Rules & Awards

The dancer’s age is determined by their age on Jan. 1^st 2024:

• PeeWee: 5-6 years old
• Mini: 7-8 years old
• Junior: 9-11 years old
• Teen: 12-14 years old
• Senior: 15-18 years old

We have two different competition levels at Shine. We have a competitive level and an intermediate level. If you chose to compete in the intermediate level then you are not eligible for any overall cash prizes. The top 10 dancer’s  in each age division, competing in the competitive level, will be announced with the top 3 receiving a cash prize. The top 5 dancer’s in each age division, competing in the intermediate level will also be announced.

Solos have a time limit of 2:45 sec. Points will be deducted from each judge if you exceed the time limit.

• Jazz – Contains traditional jazz movements and technique.
• Tap – Scored on tap technique.
• Lyrical – Dancers interpret the lyrics, mood and content of the music. 
• Contemporary – Routine incorporating lyrical or jazz movement fused with modern elements.
• Hip Hop – Street or contemporary jazz-funk.
• Musical Theatre – A routine interpreting a song from a Broadway or Movie Musical.
• Ballet – Includes classical or contemporary ballet movements and technique.
• Open – Any style of dance or combination of styles.

All music must be uploaded at the time of registration or emailed no more then 5 days before the event.  No music will be turned in the day of the event.  All music must be in good taste with no explicit lyrics, points will be deducted.

Judges will take into consideration choreography, technique, showmanship, and the Overall Package. Each judge will award up to 100 points. We will have four judges at the event. The lowest score will be dropped. The remaining total score of the three judges will determine the ranking of the routine. In the case of a tie, the judges will select the high score winner. Critiques and score sheets will be provided. They will be mailed within one week of the event. If you have a solo choreographed by one of our judges, their score will automatically be a zero and will be dropped. You will however, still receive the critiques.

This will be emailed to you 7 days before the event. You are expected to compete in the order you are scheduled. If you are unable to compete in that order you will be automatically disqualified from the event.

Registration for the event must be done through our website. You must submit payment in order to fully register. You will not be confirmed for the event unless you are paid in full.  Registration deadline is 10 days prior to the event.  No Refunds.

Entry fees are $150/per solo entered. You may enter up to three solos. (Includes Title Competition)

Everyone will be judged according to a point system. The scoring scale will be as follows:

• Platinum – 293-300
• High Gold – 285-292
• Gold – 278-284
• High Silver -270-277
• Silver-255-269

Everyone will be judged according to a point system. The scoring scale will be as follows:

• Platinum – 290-300
• High Gold – 280-289
• Gold – 270-279
• High Silver – 260-269
• Silver – 250-259

Shine will award the top ten highest scoring soloists from each age division with cash awards going to the top three. All cash prizes are guaranteed.

• 3^rd place will receive – $50 Cash Award on stage.
• 2^nd place will receive – $150 Cash Award on stage.
• 1^st place will receive – $300 Cash Award on stage.

•Dancers will receive the cash award on stage during the awards ceremony.

Shine will recognize the highest scoring solo in each performance category. This will take place before the announcement of top ten at each awards ceremony. (Competitive division only)

We will announce a top 10 in the competitive division and a top 5 in the intermediate division. The judges will break all ties.

Included in your registration is your entry into the “SHINE” Title Category.  Winners will receive a crown and flowers. We will have one winner in every age division. Judging criteria is different then in the solo competition with emphasis based more on showmanship and overall package.
